Tet: 1968—Tan Son Nhut
By Den Cook, USAF
~member of 377th Combat Security Police at Tan Son Nhut in Vietnam
~he worked in a bunker in Alpha sector on the day of the Tet Offensive
~the attack started with rockets hitting Bravo Sector
~a Freedom Bird started lifting off the runway and he saw red and green tracers rise from the ground to the plane, letting him know there were a lot of VC and NVA close by
~the radio announced that the fence line had been penetrated and Echo and Alpha sectors were overrun (right where he was!)
~he was so scared his knees were knocking and teeth were chattering
~then the first choppers arrived
~followed by gunships
~it was a desperate fight for their lives
~there was heavy automatic gunfire for several minutes
~his radio stopped working and there was total darkness as he heard the fight all around him
~suddenly there were two shadows running straight at him from the fence line
~he had the two figures in his weapon’s sight and screamed “Halt, who goes there?”
~he started to pull the trigger when he heard “don’t shoot, it’s us!”
~he hesitated and did not fire
~two air force guys dove into his bunker
~he became angry at himself because his hesitation jeopardized everyone behind him, if it had been the enemy he would be dead and they would be in danger
~the fight went on for days
~he attended a memorial at the 051 Bunker a few days after the battle, complete with a fast mover flyby and an army flyby with gunships
